“Let us raise our children in such a way that they can face any trouble, and not be surprised when difficulties come; let us bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord…When we teach our children to be good, to be gentle, to be forgiving, to be generous, to love their fellow men, to regard this present age as nothing, we instill virtue in their souls, and reveal the image of God within them. This, then, is our task: to educate both ourselves and our children in godliness; otherwise what answer will we have before Christ’s judgement-seat?”
St. John Chrysostom, Homily on Ephesians 6: 1-4
In the movie The Lion in Winter, the character of Henry II has a brief scene, between bouts of fighting with various members of his family, where he stand atop his castle battlements and looks deeply into heavens. As he gazes at the star-filled sky, he marvels at the wisdom of the Three Wise Men, who had the education to be able to look at that sky, filled with distractions, and discern which of the stars was the star to lead them to the newly-born Christ Child, and then the faith to follow that star to Him. That is the purpose of the education of our children: it takes wisdom to see the truth and beauty of our Lord, to discern that truth from the distractions that surround us, so that when they find Him, they have the wisdom to recognize Him, and the strength and the faith to follow Him where He leads–to give our children what they need to become saints. Everything at Seat of Wisdom is chosen with that goal in mind, and everything is geared to aiding our families in educating our children to that purpose. We aim to imbue the faith into everything we do, so that we can deeply embed the faith into the hearts and mind of our children, and then to give them the tools to defend the faith and themselves as they grow into a world that will challenge their faith at every step. Everything at Seat of Wisdom is geared to give our children to wisdom and the strength to become saints.
